If you are running a business, perhaps it may feel like it is a life and death situation because everything rests on cashflow, shareholders or the economy. Now imagine if a life depended on that, should we not put the same amount of gravity on that issue. If we work with blood, sweat and tears, these guys who are racing against time to live are indeed sweating blood and weeping tears. The person who lost in the game of life is the one that is already dead.
If one company can be bureaucratic, stuck by endless red tape, then what about the consolidation of companies. The sand is packed so tightly that there is not enough room to move or breathe for the helpless souls that are not even in plain sight. Let us fix Facebook they said in 2018. Let us prevent misuse of the tools they said in 2018. We, the people, must continue to repair the division to re-unite the world for our common causes.
Nevertheless, we should not disregard the efforts that Facebook is making to improve and contribute to their charitable causes. However, if Facebook does not have the capabilities to do the right thing, make way for others to come in and do so. Even as we have the rights of the consumer to choose what platform to use that does not mean the companies should be monopolistic in this world. We can support other platforms that also contribute to making this world a better place for everyone to live in. Business leaders of the listed companies mainly answer to the shareholders, who in turn are governed by the laws of the land.
Civilization was not built solely on friendship, love and all things beautiful and plain. Violence is a vicious and senseless act of war. However, we did not start it. The war on humanity has already begun, especially with the increased possibility of the spread of fake news, political interference and the inability to filter tons of unhealthy information. Even though Facebook encourages self-policing, but we must also continue to push for immediate changes by all necessary means possible.
Let us stand up and not hide behind the false promise of safety and security as we are hiding behind the truth of the potential dangers. People may mock the keyboard warriors of the internet but if the global users are a united front, it will become impossible to ignore all our demands for global peace and prosperity. As we plan to build more resilient communities in the future, the greater task of saving our planet lay ahead for our own survival that will not only allow us to put our differences aside but bring us all closer as one people.
There is an interesting question that always pops into a casual discussion. If your wife or your mother is drowning, who would you save if you could only save one? Let me think about it while I go fishing. Firstly, whoever came up with this question never gave it much thought. My wife is a fantastic swimmer and my mother would not even go near the water, unless there was a life jacket. Secondly, it is possible to save both.
We love the golden rule. If I save you, you must save me back one day. That sounds fair except the majority that we do run into may need our help one day but since they did nothing for us perhaps, we must ask them to take a queue number. There are thousands and millions out there screaming for help. If we were to sit down and judge everyone to see who was more in need then the sky will fall on our heads first.
Let us sit back for a minute and reflect awhile. What if we save that one guy or girl who can save thousands or millions? That would make our life a whole lot easier and have enough time for fishing which some do really care greatly about. Probably the person in power has the influence to affect the lives of many and to determine the right kind of help and who to give to. What about those people with no leaders or their leaders are an insane genocidal general?
Another way to think about it is that if we need to save so many people, then why not be super-effective and make things more effortless. We can save as many people as possible within a limited period. Reasoning behind this is that while we can buy time-saving efficiency, but we cannot actually buy time. If it is time to go, then it is time to go. As much as we like to control our own destiny, there is always a possibility that things do not come our way.
Unfortunately, none of us are God, who can completely alter this world, but we have people in positions who can make changes and do better. As we continue to improve our standards we will also hold ourselves accountable for mediocrity. If we continue to push the limits of the frontier, the resourcefulness of men will find a way, or we can leave it to fate to find out what has been laid out for us.
Off to serve my country so here is wishing you, your family and friends good health, wealth and happiness.
Jules Verne’s hero took 80 days to travel around the world starting from London to Suez, then to India, followed by Hong Kong, after that Japan and finally USA. Here is a modern variation of his travel itinerary that will probably take less than 18 days to complete with some very slight alterations. With the insular and protectionist world that is closing in on us, one can only wonder if it will eventually affect tourism as well?
Usually, it may take a couple days to finally soak in the holiday atmosphere and thus we propose a slight change of the order in the itinerary. The order is ranked according to the happiness index of countries, hoping that by the time you finish your trip, the stress from daily life will no longer be a consequence. Starting with New York and the famous Empire State Building. Secondly, the Stone Hedges off London. Thirdly, Miyajima near Hiroshima. Fourthly, recognising that Hong Kong is part of one China, we would disembark at Beijing to see the Great Wall of China instead. Fifth, to the pyramids in Egypt and lastly ending the tour at Taj Mahal from Delhi.
The historical sites were taken as a benchmark from the different Wonders of the World. Stone Hedges was from the classical list. The great pyramids of Giza were from the ancient world list. Great Wall of China was from the Middle Ages list. Taj Mahal is from the modern list. The Empire State building is from the modern world list and Miyajima is one of the 7 wonders of Japan that was also mentioned as one of the most scenic places in that country. These sites on these 6 countries, together with the other 189 in the world, have all made its own impact to the history of mankind.
As the world continues to rebalance itself on international cooperation and trade, some of these counties have already gone through crises. England is going through an exit from the EU which was originally formed to prevent future wars. The trading route Suez cannel once almost bankrupted Egypt. Gandhi’s peaceful legacy was threatened by three family generations of assassinations. America’s current protectionist stance, China’s aggressive growth and even worse the horrors of war inflicted on Japan. Instead of space travel, tourism opens up greater cooperation and trading to the world.
Tourism has contributed USD$7.6 trillion dollars to the global GDP and created 292 million jobs all around the world. This is a good way to have fun and yet contribute to the locals. In the World Happiness Index, they have found that sometimes the more you give back, the happier you can become. What better way to do that then on a vacation? For the many who have their own version of their dream destinations, when it comes to giving more, countries would want to warmly greet you with open arms and flash you with that golden smile.
Have you ever closed your eyes and imagine that for a second that you are in a faraway getaway destination? The smell of the breeze, the light touch of the sun on your face, the ocean calling with the waves crashing and the salty air that is wispy and refreshing. The power of imagination is so powerful that athletes, professors, and even people, who need the will to live, can make the difference between success and failure.
Long before political campaigns that garner the votes of the people, military institutions that demanded patriotism, schools can inculcate a mindset. In today’s context, we have advertising and marketing that can sell ice to an eskimo. The advancement of online media has made progressive waves forward that consumer behaviour and preference can become more of an accurate science. The refinement of virtual reality that will take away the commercialised negativity and make brainwashing seamlessly coincidental. This can all become quite positive.
In the world that we live in, even within the big cities and central business districts, we are trapped in this disillusion of the haves and the have nots. The more fortunate, which perhaps could have even more empathy, donated, volunteered and sacrificed for these worthy causes, grow tired but the need for more and more aid and donations are again needed to be more cost effective. There is no quick answer but perhaps to increase the motivation to tap on the strengths and skillsets to work on a more sustainable solution together.
Walt Disney painted a picture of the perfect utopian world that he called Tomorrowland. However, he died before he could realise his vision. From the creation of Tomorrowland in Disneyland, to the movies and stories that have been reproduced, they have not made a lasting impact. The underlying gist of a futuristic world is not technology but how technology can not only make our lives better but everyone else’s as well. The inspiration maybe lacking but on hindsight there are leaders and believers out there who know what it will take to make a better place for everybody.
“With every action, there is an equal ……” Once said a wise man. We need to recognise that with the lives that we lead, we can do so much by just allowing ourselves to be engaged. With great hope that the makers of the message are compelling and reeling so that they can solicit further response to engage in a concept of a smarter world for everybody. If not let us try again and again and again, with the promise that we will never give up until we find the answer and the grand oasis that we have always been dreaming off.
He started his journey almost three years ago when he was developing a friend finding mobile application. Having saw the need to extend the services into social media, he then wanted to focus on a matchmaking niche. Along the way he met his long time university mate, whom he partnered up with to make virtual reality videos. Unfortunately, the partnership did not work out and now he is back where he first began. With renewed invigoration, his mission is to do even more for society. These are our stories......
